Types of PTSD Therapy

PTSD therapy typically involves a variety of approaches aimed at reducing symptoms, improving coping skills, and enhancing overall well-being. While the type of approach varies on an individual’s needs, there are a handful of therapies that have been known to help people with PTSD. If you or someone you love is struggling with PTSD, browse the following section to learn more about some of the most effective types of therapy.

           Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT):

CBT is one of the most effective treatments for PTSD. It focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors related to the traumatic event. This therapy helps individuals understand how thoughts and feelings influence behavior and teaches coping strategies to manage symptoms.

           Exposure Therapy:

Exposure therapy involves gradually and safely exposing an individual to thoughts, feelings, and situations related to the traumatic event. Over time, this can help to reduce fear and anxiety associated with those stimuli. It can be conducted in various forms, such as imaginal exposure (revisiting the traumatic event through the imagination) or in vivo exposure (gradual real-life exposure).

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR):

EMDR is a specialized therapy that involves focusing on traumatic memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, taps, or sounds. This process aims to reprocess traumatic memories and reduce their emotional impact.

           Mindfulness-Based Therapies:

Mindfulness techniques, such as mindfulness meditation and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), can help individuals with PTSD develop awareness of their thoughts and feelings without becoming overwhelmed by them. Mindfulness activities can help individuals regulate their emotions better and reduce their stress.

           Trauma-Sensitive Yoga:

Engaging in physical activities such as yoga can help individuals manage their PTSD by reducing stress and promoting relaxation. Trauma-informed yoga is designed to be sensitive to individuals' traumatic experiences and focus on gentle movements and breathing exercises.

           PTSD Therapy for Law Enforcement

Law enforcement personnel often encounter traumatic events, violence, and high-stress situations that can contribute to the development of PTSD. If you’re living with PTSD, check out the following section to learn about techniques that first responder therapists use to assist those in law enforcement.

           Confidentiality & Trust:

Police officers may have concerns about confidentiality and the potential impact of seeking mental health treatment on their careers. First-responder therapists prioritize confidentiality by creating a safe, nonjudgmental space where officers feel comfortable discussing their experiences and emotions.

           Trauma-Focused Therapies:

Trauma-focused therapies, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Exposure Therapy, can be effective in treating PTSD in police officers. These types of therapies help individuals process traumatic experiences, change negative thought patterns, and develop coping skills to manage everyday symptoms.

           Stress Management & Resilience Building:

PTSD therapy for police officers may include strategies for managing stress management and building resilience. This may involve individuals learning relaxation techniques, mindfulness practices, and coping skills to help them better regulate their emotions and respond to stressors more effectively.

           Peer Support & Group Therapy:

Group therapy or peer support groups specifically for police officers can provide valuable opportunities for peer validation, support, and shared experiences. Being able to connect with fellow officers who understand their experiences can reduce feelings of isolation and promote the healing process.

PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, can develop after an immensely stressful, frightening, or life altering occurrence. Each person that experiences PTSD has different symptoms and deals with it differently - it is unique to everyone. There are many different causes and symptoms of PTSD, so read below to discover more about it.

Every single person does not develop PTSD that has endured experiences like this. There still aren’t answers as to why some people develop PTSD and some do not. That being said, there are some factors that people have that have shown are more likely to develop PTSD.

           Who Is at Risk?

People who have experienced a traumatic event that also deal with mental health issues including anxiety & depression are more susceptible to developing PTSD. If you yourself do not have anxiety or depression but one of your parents do, it is also said to be a factor in developing PTSD. Another factor that puts people at risk of PTSD is loneliness or lack of support. After a traumatic event, if you do not have a support system, whether it be friends or family, it is more likely for PTSD to develop.

           Symptoms of PTSD

Reliving The Event: This can come in many forms, including flashbacks, intrusive thoughts or images, nightmares, and even physical sensations such as pain, trembling, shaking, or nausea.

Avoiding Feelings or Memories: Having to keep busy, avoiding anything that reminds you of the trauma, partaking in self-destructive or reckless behavior, being unable to express affection, and not being able to remember details of the traumatic event.

Coping behaviors are defense mechanisms that can help us deal with or avoid situations that cause anxiety. If you have generalized anxiety disorder, it’s important to be aware of your own behavior patterns, because some of them may be self-destructive or cause strain with your friends and loved ones. Self-awareness can help you deal with your anxiety in healthier ways and even develop better coping behaviors to address your anxiety at its source.

Marriage Counseling: Is It A Good Option For You?

Curious about marriage counseling? Discover if it's right for you. Thrive Counseling offers expert guidance to help couples improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen their relationship.

Illnesses, finances, poor communication, and anger, among other things, can cause problems in a marriage. If your relationship is on the rocks, you might be dealing with argument after argument. If you aren't sure how to fix things within your relationship, it might be time to look at marriage counseling as this can be the gateway to help you rebuild your relationship. Couples often turn to marriage counseling when they need help managing conflict and stress within their relationship. Marriage counseling can help you take a step back, get a better understanding of your relationship, and make better thought-out decisions.

What is marriage counseling?

Marriage counseling, sometimes referred to as couples therapy, helps individuals in a relationship better understand their conflicts. Over a series of sessions, couples will work to resolve their conflicts and improve their relationships in a healthy way. Therapists will give couples the tools they need to become better communicators, as well as ideas on how to negotiate through their differences and solve problems together. Arguing isn't always unhealthy. In fact, some therapists will teach couples how to argue in a healthier way.

           How does marriage counseling work?

While most marriage counseling is short-term, other couples may need these services for several months. Sessions are generally once a week and both individuals are present. The therapist helps the couple understand where the conflict is coming from and works with them to resolve it by teaching them new skills. These skills may include problem-solving as a team, openly communicating, and discussing the differences in the relationship.

While these sessions may not be easy and they may bring up hurtful feelings, your therapist is there to help guide you both through the emotions, not taking sides. After going to marriage counseling for a few sessions, you may start to notice you and your partner connecting better.

No marriages are 100% perfect and there are bound to be conflicts at different points throughout the relationship. No matter the cause of the conflict, a disruption in the relationship can provoke feelings of sadness, fear, worry, stress, and more.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a difficult medical condition; it is a mental disorder that arises due to trauma in the patient’s past. It can be caused by all kinds of things, such as getting in a car accident or witnessing a violent crime. Victims of PTSD can have dramatic effects on a person’s life: he or she may be vulnerable to certain triggers that cause them to relive the traumatic event, such as specific sounds and smells. He or she may experience bad dreams or flashbacks as well. In severe cases, someone with PTSD will have repeated, involuntary, vivid memories of the event. These experiences can be just as difficult as the initial trauma and may even contribute to a worsening of the condition.

PTSD can have devastating effects on the relationships in a person’s life. If a family member, friend, or coworker experiences a difficult event, it can help to recognize the symptoms of PTSD so you can encourage quick intervention.

           Angry Outbursts

Someone suffering from PTSD may be prone to sudden outbursts of anger, sadness, or agitation. This makes sense, as frequent feelings of irritability or being on edge are among the symptoms of PTSD. If someone you love is losing control and lashing out in anger more often than before, this could be a sign of emotional suffering that might require treatment.

Dealing with trauma can be difficult; many people respond by distancing themselves from people and situations that remind them of their trauma. As the victim’s condition progresses, he or she might continue to isolate themselves from friends and family member.

           Substance Abuse

It’s fairly common for people with PTSD to self-medicate. In these cases, they may turn to drugs or alcohol. Unfortunately, part of the problem with substance abuse is the increasing need of the drug to produce the same high. If left untreated, the substance abuse can turn to addiction and eventually dependence. This can have escalating effects on every facet of a person’s life.

Virtual Online Therapy for Seasonal Depression

Struggling with seasonal depression? Discover the benefits of online therapy at Thrive Counseling. Our virtual sessions offer flexible, personalized support to help you manage symptoms and boost your mood year-round.

When temperatures begin to drop, the sun remains lower in the sky and sets much earlier, and the weather changes for the season, many people notice themselves feeling more down and less energetic. While it can be easy to write off these symptoms as a simple case of “winter blues,” often they are signs of a serious condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). If you believe you may be experiencing such seasonal depression, you can take steps to fight it and help boost your mood such as pursuing professional therapy and counseling services.

           What is SAD?

SAD is a type of depression triggered by the changing of the seasons, which typically manifests during the winter months. While the exact cause of SAD remains unknown, potential contributing factors include drops in serotonin or melatonin levels and circadian rhythm disruption due to the reduced hours of sunlight. Be on the lookout for certain common symptoms of this condition, such as fatigue and low energy, poor sleep, loss of interest in activities you would normally enjoy, weight or appetite changes, difficulty concentrating, ease of agitation, and thoughts of suicide.

If your lack of motivation and dampened spirits persist for more than a few days, it’s recommended to see a doctor. Once you have been diagnosed with SAD, there will be various treatment options available to you, the most popular of which being light therapy. Working on improving your overall mental well-being through traditional talk therapy may benefit you as well.

           Why Consider Therapy?

Therapy will teach you to take control of your mindset. If you practice identifying negative thoughts, you can work on actively changing them into associations that make you feel better. Therapy often helps patients manage stress, develop coping skills, find resolutions, and increase their communication skills.

Our therapists will inform you of healthy ways to cope with your SAD symptoms. You will gain a better understanding of self and learn the tools you need to establish and realize a path to meeting your goals. Keeping active and accomplishing things will create positivity in your life. When it comes to dealing with SAD, avoidance behavior is common, so it is especially important to schedule activities.

When and Why to Take Your Child to Therapy

Wondering when and why to take your child to therapy? Thrive Counseling offers guidance on recognizing the signs that your child could benefit from professional support and how therapy can help them thrive.

If your child requires child therapy services, going to a professional can be very beneficial. Sometimes, children do not tell their parents or guardians when they are feeling down or going through mental problems. Sometimes, it is up to the parents to be able to recognize cues that their child is going through something they cannot sort out on their own.

           Signs of Problems

It is not the easiest thing to recognize signs of your child needing to see a child therapist. There are a few things that you should look out for. If your child complains about feelings of sadness or hopelessness, it may be time to seek out child therapy. Other signs can include persistent worry, anxiety, or irrational fear. They may lose interest in hobbies they once loved. Your child may experience a loss of appetite or may not be sleeping regularly anymore. Sometimes, your child’s grades in school may inexplicably drop or your child may have self-esteem issues. All of these signs can lead you to believe that your child may benefit from seeing a child therapist. If you think that your child needs to see a child therapist, it is best to follow your intuition. There are many benefits for both you and your child if they see a therapist.

           Benefits of Child Play Therapy

Child play therapy is a safe place for your children to express their feelings. It can help your child develop problem-solving and coping skills, which in turn helps their self-esteem and instills confidence. Your child can develop lifelong skills that will help them process and move through their emotions more effectively. They will be able to better deal with conflict and manage their feelings. Child therapy is a great tool that can help your children be secure and focused and better able to build healthy relationships with themselves and others.

Healthcare workers and others on the front line in the fight against COVID-19 are heroes whose efforts must not go unrecognized. Such positions take a physical and mental toll and put workers at serious risk for post-traumatic stress disorder. Exhausted doctors and nurses have compared their overwhelmed hospitals with limited space and resources to MASH units and described their working experience as being "in the trenches." There are many contributing factors to the trauma that frontline workers are facing with the current pandemic situation, but the best method for fending it off is preparedness. By staying consciously aware of the following issues you can help manage your stress and mitigate your risk.

           Safety Concerns

Even under normal circumstances, nurses often feel like they have little control over their work conditions and personal safety. Recently, this has been amplified dramatically due to concerns of catching the Coronavirus. Healthcare workers are among those at the highest risk for infection, yet many report they are being sent in to work without the proper protective equipment, or even being told to remove their masks so as not to scare patients. Doctors and nurses must protect themselves first and foremost in order to fulfill their duties, which, despite the risks, is something they are very much willing and eager to do. Many feel stuck between a rock and a hard place, just doing their best to keep up. But dealing with this lack of autonomy day in and day out is one the top factors wearing down many frontline workers.

           The Tolls of PPE

For those fortunate enough to have adequate access to proper protective equipment, another concern arises. There are challenges to wearing a mask over your face for extended periods of time every day. You are at risk for dehydration, overheating, and exhaustion. Most frontline workers are in fast-paced positions, where opportunities to find moments here and there to rest, breathe, take a drink, and otherwise calm themselves down are few and far between, There are already enough mental and emotional challenges to overcome during the pandemic without adding to your body's physical strain.

           Long Hours & Physical Isolation

A study of U.S. physicians conducted shortly before the COVID-19 outbreak found that 46% showed symptoms of burnout, and it's safe to assume the number has shot up since. On the whole, healthcare workers tend to be very self-reliant and are notoriously bad at asking for help. Now, as they give all of themselves to their work, many nurses simply can't leave the traumas of their day behind when they go to sleep at night. On top of a job that is naturally emotionally-draining, they are fighting an uphill battle against the enormous and ever-growing number of Coronavirus patients leading to longer hours and more stressful working conditions. It's essential to monitor your own well-being and watch for signs of burnout.

When situations arrive, everyone reacts to them differently, especially stressful situations. The recent COVID-19 crisis is proving to be a stressful situation for most people. Whether it is fear and anxiety about the virus, dealing with the social isolation, or trying to work from home while home schooling your children, this outbreak may take a toll on your mental health. However, it's important to know that you are not alone in this.

Ways to Self-Soothe and Stay on Track

During this time of uncertainty, it is important to take time out for yourself and self-soothe. Some ideas to help boost your mental health during COVID-19 include:

           Breathe, Stretch, Meditate

           - Use this time to practice breathing exercises to reduce stress or anxiety. Try taking in a deep breath, holding it for a count of 5, and then breathe out. Repeat that for 5 minutes each day. You can also try stretching out your body by doing yoga or calming your mind by completing meditation programs. If your kids are home, have them join in on a yoga session!

           Nutrition

           - Be sure to eat healthy, well-balanced meals. A healthy diet is not only good for your body, and a good way to prevent medical problems, but it can also affect your mood.

           Sleep

           - Make sure you are getting plenty of rest while quarantined. Many think this is the time to binge watch all the shows they've missed. However, getting the proper amount of sleep is important for your mental health. Adults 24-64 need a recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night.

           Mental Breaks

           - It is important to take breaks from binge watching your favorite episodes, as well as reading or listening to news stories. Taking a break from social media can be good for your mental health during this time as you will not repeatedly see things about the virus that can be upsetting.

           Connect with Others

           - Now is a great time to connect with your friends and family through phone calls, text messages, video chats, or even take the time to write a letter. Talk to the people you love about how you are feeling and your concerns. Check in with your older loved ones or neighbors to ensure they are doing well and have the supplies they need. This can be a very lonely and isolated time, but if you connect with your family and friends virtually, you can lessen the possibility of falling into depression.

           Be a Role Model

           - While children are out of school, it is important to be a role model during this time. Children are always watching and learning from their parents, caregivers, and the world around them. Teach them the importance of health eating, getting good sleep, exercising, and more.

           Routine

           - With school and work being closed, many families are off their normal routines. Keeping up with your regular routines as much as you can right now can help provide some stability in your life and your child's life.

Seek Help When You Need It

This is a stressful time and some people will turn to drugs and alcohol to get them through. However, it is important to be wise about your decisions, especially if you have a history of drug and/or alcohol abuse. Try to keep busy, take up a new hobby, or call friends and family to help pass the time so you do not relapse.

This is an important time to take care of yourself, to let yourself relax and unwind. Take a long, hot bath. Do something you love. Take time for you.

How Can Online Therapy Help With Back-to-School Anxiety?

Explore how online therapy can help with back-to-school anxiety. Thrive Counseling provides convenient, personalized support to address stress and build coping strategies for a smoother transition into the school year.

Going back to school after a summer can bring forward a cascade of emotions, especially in children, teens and young adults. These feelings are common, but they can be intense, especially if they are entering a new grade or starting at a new school. For some children, going back to school can evoke positive feelings, such as excitement for seeing old friends, learning new things, or participating in sports or other extracurricular activities. But other children can experience anxiety over past negative experiences, fear of not fitting in, or pressure to get good grades; these concerns can weigh heavily on their minds and affect their mental well-being.

Whether your teen’s stress comes from returning to school or stems from some other source, online therapy can be a great tool. It is designed to help children and adolescents develop the tools they need to navigate their fear and anxiety.

How might online therapy benefit your child?

           Someone to Listen

One of the most beneficial things for any child is the presence of a supportive listener. An online therapist’s job is to listen to your child, validate their feelings, and help them build confidence in their ability to handle any situation. If your child has specific concerns about how to address a particular problem or has demonstrated particular difficulty in handling certain scenarios, an online therapist can help develop strategies and coping mechanisms to help them going forward.

           A Little Distance

As a parent, you want nothing more than to make the transition back to school easy on your child. However, your eagerness might create difficulties for children with anxiety or other troubles – no matter how well-intentioned you might be. Our children understand far more than we think they do. If you are experiencing your own anxieties or expectations around your child’s return to school, there is a chance that they are picking up on your emotions; this can further compound their emotions. Speaking to a more neutral third party during online therapy can ease these concerns and create a safe, calm environment in which to voice their feelings.

           Familiar Surroundings

Attending therapy online can have a particular benefit for young people who suffer from anxiety. Some young people have difficulty managing their feelings in particular situations or locations. It can be difficult to open up to a therapist in an unfamiliar office; during an online therapy session, however, the patient is surrounded by a safe and familiar environment. This can make it easier to relax and open up to a therapist, resulting in a more productive session.

           Someone in Your Child’s Corner

Every young person needs a team of supportive adults to get them through difficult times. This team is made up of parents, teachers, guidance counselors, coaches, troop leaders, club leaders, and others. Everyone plays a role in your child’s success. If your child or adolescent is having trouble adjusting to a transition such as returning to school, consider adding an online therapist to that team. Thrive Counseling & Consulting, PLLC offers online therapy sessions for young people experiencing back-to-school anxiety and other difficulties. We serve patients in Greensboro, Fayetteville, Cary, and the surrounding areas. Our online therapy services make getting help easier than ever!

Tips for Dealing with Seasonal Depression

Dealing with seasonal depression, also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), requires a multi-faceted approach that may involve lifestyle changes, therapy, and possibly medication. Here are some tips that may help:

           Maximize Exposure to Natural Light:

Try to spend time outside during daylight hours, even when it's cloudy. Sunlight is essential in producing active vitamin D, as it can help to improve your mood. While you’re inside, keep curtains and blinds open during the day, and consider arranging your workspace to receive more natural light.

           Exercise Regularly:

Physical activity can help relieve stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. It doesn’t have to be intense; even daily walks can be very beneficial.

           Maintain a Routine:

Keeping a regular schedule for sleeping, eating, and activities can help stabilize your mood. Try to get up and go to bed at the same time every day.

           Eat a Healthy Diet:

While you may not realize it, what you eat can impact your mood and overall energy level. Try to maintain a well-balanced diet that’s rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains. In some cases, people find that reducing sugar and processed foods helps to boost their mental health.

           Stay Connected:

Engage with family and friends. Social support is crucial in dealing with depression. You may want to consider joining a support group if you’re feeling isolated.

           Seek Professional Help:

If your symptoms are severe or don't improve with self-care, it might be time to see a mental health professional. A therapist can help you develop strategies to cope with SAD. For those dealing with severe symptoms, medication may be beneficial.

           Mindfulness & Relaxation Techniques:

Practices such as meditation, yoga, and deep-breathing exercises can reduce stress and improve your overall sense of well-being.

           Plan for the Future:

Planning something to look forward to can sometimes help lift your spirits. It could be a trip, a project, or an event that excites you.
